This is something I should have made a long time ago. You know, back when I still made caves and it'd actually be useful to me. Anyway, I posted the link a little below, and I'd appreciate it if you all'd download it, play around with it, and tell me what you think. I don't want you guys to mention any potential new features just yet, I just want to know if you can find any bugs, or anything that doesn't function in the way that you would perhaps expect it to.

http://www.interguild.org/hatpc/cavemaker.zip (EDIT: You cannot trust this link to be remotely up-to-date.)
original link:

Due to a forum bug, you'll probably have to copy that and paste it into your address bar.

To run that, you'll first have to extract that all into the same folder. If you can't extract zip files, download WinRAR: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

You'll also need to make sure you have the latest version of Java: http://www.java.com

Inside, there's a file named cavemaker.bat, which you will double-click on the run the program. A cmd window will pop up and hang around with you the whole time as you use the cavemaker. Close it, and you close the cavemaker with it, so, just ignore it for now. If it comes up and then just goes away, then you (probably) have not, either, followed these steps properly, or you do not have the latest version of java on your computer. I'm working on a way to make it stand-alone, but for now this will suffice. Also, you can make a short-cut of the .bat file (right-click create shortcut, probably) and then you can paste that into wherever you'd like to be able to open the cavemaker from. Also note that, since this was coded in java, it should be able to run on systems other than Windows. I haven't seen fungus in a while, but if you see him, direct him here so I can get that straightened out. We might have to jump through a few hoops, but it should be able to run on his mac. Update: The cavemaker program is now in a jar file. You should be able to run it by double clicking but, if not, set java as the default program from opening jar files. The .bat is still there if needed.

If you have Windows 7, check out this short topic for help: http://www.interguild.org/members/forums/topic.php?id=5124

I'm going to attempt to list some of the changes that I've made from the Neopets version. Here's what I could think of, in no particular order:

Spoiler: ''List of Changes from the Neopets Version''

So yeah, try it out, and if there's anything that gets on your nerves, let me know I'll try making changes to it. I'll work on adding new features at an unspecified point in the future. For now, I'd like to ensure that this is working properly and there's nothing about it that people just hate to death.

I'm on dial-up, and it'll take significantly longer. I also figure that tomorrow I might be able to fix that thing with hitting enter in the level properties... but no promises.

OK, new update up. Hopefully, undo works for all caves now, alt+char works the way it should (the only thing that doesn't work is alt+shift, but you have delete and backspace for that), and you should now be able to accept in the properties window using enter. I'd have more in this update except that undo bug was kinda huge.

and alt+shift works for me. I don't understand what you meant by backspace/delete, though.

Sorry, I meant alt+space for setting blank tiles. Press alt+space right now (like, in any window for any program) and see why I couldn't have it.

Google246 (Snarwin) was gonna make a cavemaker ages ago. He never did get around to it, but when I suggested he allow fake crates he said he was gonna call them clones instead. I kinda think clones better describes them anyway. If somebody saw "fake crake" and didn't know anything about them, they might immediately assume that they were wooden crates that you could walk through or stand on or something like that. I guess I just agreed that "clone" better described their function. Even if it's not the perfect name, at least there's no confusion between it and what you might expect fake crates to be.

so what's next to do for the CaveMaker? we might just be able to release it now. I don't really have any more ideas to add.

oh yeah, any hope for zooming in and out? or maybe that's too crazy...

I still have to make your options save for the next time you load the cavemaker (the last place you opened from/saved to should probably be saved too). I'm not sure how people actually do that, so I'll just put them into a text file, or something. And Isa wants me to make it so that, when you undo or resize you don't get warped back up to the top left. I also need a better name for "add text to view map". The level properties window is stil ugly. Finally, a "Save All" feature should be included. Then I need to figure out how to make it cmd-window-free.

Somebody said that, if I don't touch the default level, then open should close that one instead of leaving it open. I'm thinking about making it so that there's no default level, and you'll have to press ctrl+n to get started. In my mind, that'd be better, but some people might not enjoy the extra click. In most internal frame programs, that's how you have to do it. Maybe I could make it save what saved levels were open last and bring those up when you load the cavemaker?

Zooming's PROBABLY too crazy. Not impossible, but the hell I want to do it. Lots of image scaling and stuff. After I get those last few things through, then we can start talking crazy stuff. I think it'd be cool to make caves using the HATIC images, and you can switch between "themes" in the options. Hell, you could set the theme to "Aeon" and basically now it's a basemaker. Maybe a help menu, more tooltips, or at least a readme. Something to help the peoples out, anyway.

Here's the outstanding bug reports that I got. If those happen to anyone again, see if you can figure out why?

" csd, I just got a horrible glitch. I opened a cave, renamed it, then I Saved As, then I went into another window, deleted to old version from before Saving As and realizing that the little open window doesn't allow you to delete files, then I looked back at the window and saw that somehow I had turned a tile into a blue bird, so I clicked undo and everything disappeared. it was the same way that everything disappears when you change dimensions, but it wouldn't come back. the worst part about the glitch is that I don't know what caused it.... " -- Acce, did you ever figure out what that was? Maybe it was caused by a combination of the enter and undo bugs that I fixed?

" I'm having no problems with this Cavemaker. Although if you close the code window the Cavemaker closes down too. " -- I doubt it.

Is it just me, or is it almost always Accel who finds these glitches?

Anyways, I finally downloaded the updated version of cavemaker, and it seems to be pretty good. But then again, I don't go glitch hunting. But the updated features are pretty cool.

That last comment on your big post is my post, properly!!

Yes, it does close down. I thought it might just be hiding. But when I opened Cavemaker again though the file... my cave was gone. Just a blank, empty grid of tiles.

Unless CSD makes the cavemaker can automatically save everytime you make a cave. Like Backup.

auto save doesn't seem necessary. I'm already in the habit of saving often. and catta was probably closing the entire program instead of just the code box. The code box is smaller and it doesn't take up the whole screen.

I think that should be fixed by now. I don't feel like testing it again.

You should add a feature that will let you edit the code yourself. and if you make shortened lines, they don't show up in the grid, right? But do they still exist?

Is there really a need for an option for adding shortened lines?

I was just wondering. but what there should be is an option that will let us edit the text.

Eh, I guess...but isn't it just simple enough to add that text afterwards when you upload the actual cave?

yeah, but if you're doing multiple tests, it'd be annoying to add the text every time.

Why would you need to add a line that gets removed anyway if you're not completely sure that it will be the last version?

probably not since it would be a mess to share coding. and you'll have to learn what csd has been doing with his coding...

How exact;y would open source be a mess? It's not like this is the proprietary cavemaking SDK only avaible under an NDA plus $199? I can decompile the code to save your time giving me the code.

Basically, I'm getting the code currently so CSD won't have to upload it just because I'm interested in that stuff.

You know Neo/NF, if you're born in -97 as you said earlier, then you do have a helluva experience considering your age. Too bad TehMarz isn't here to teach you about coding, he was teh awesome.

Does your father work with coding and decided to teach you a few things about it? Or did someone else do so, or did you learn by yourself?

This is not that hard.
But I'm still impressed. I don't think you're over 16, so that is a pretty impressive feat.

And just intermediate geek? Half my class tops that.
