This guide was created to show you some of the difficult spike jumps that are possible and those that are not. There are many different things you can do with spikes but this guide will only demonstrate the basics.

To try your skills at basic land spike maneuvers, Try out the level made to go along with the guide here.

To begin let's take a look at simple spike jumping. Everyone should know it is possible to jump over three spikes when the ceiling isn't providing an obstacle. To have Hannah jump to her fullest, she needs five tiles high of free space. However, going back to spikes, some people did not know that four spikes is also possible to jump, just more challenging:

This is still possible if the two middle spikes are up a tile higher. Alternatively, the spikes can be a tile lower and you can jump five spikes as long as you land on a platform and not terrain:

In this case, the first jump in the image above would be impossible because Hannah will run into the terrain the first spike is sitting upon. You'll have to bring down that spike one tile and possibly the fourth spike as well.

You have to remember, though, Hannah needs the five tiles high of free space for most of the jump. So, if we introduce ceiling spikes, giving Hannah only four tiles high, the jump will be rendered impossible.

Now let's carry on to more challenging jumps. Hannah will always need some way to avoid hitting ceiling spikes when jumping over floor spikes, that is an important concept to keep in mind. The most basic way of doing that is having an open ceiling tile between two ceiling spikes as shown below:

Therefore, that jump is 100% possible. There are also other ways you can prevent Hannah from jumping into ceiling spikes such as adding a crate. A crate will probably make the jump more challenging as it will push Hannah back down and make Hannah harder to control.

On the other hand, if there still isn't enough room for five tiles high of free space, four tiles high is still possible. This will require a technique called duckjumping. Read guyguyxtreme's guide on duckjumping for information on how to perform it. The max amount of spikes you can duckjump over is two.

Performing a duckjump over two spikes requires accurate position and can be considered evil to newer players, so it is not recommended to use these that often. The same can be said about jumping over four spikes.

Some spikes don't require jumping to get over, all you have to do is hold the left or right arrow key, depending on which way you are going. These floor spikes have to be located at least one tile below your current position.

The above image is possible to pass, just simply hold right down. This is very easy to pass and really just provide your cave with an extra spike. However, you'll want to be careful with the position of your spikes, as some can be quite annoying and ruin your cave's enjoyment.

The spike noted out above can ruin your fun if you hold down right when you are dropping down to the ground below, as you may run into it on accident and kill yourself. These spikes can be turned into even something more evil by adding a floor spike below giving the player an even smaller space they must get through.

This trick can also be used when going upwards. The jump becomes easier if the end destination is a platform and not terrain. Both ways, upwards or down, take practice so it will take time to master these techniques.

Now that you know most there is to know about spike manuevers you can begine combining it all into one spikey cave! Be sure not to overuse spikes and make sure the entire cave isn't just spikes, make sure there are cool traps too.

The example above just combines most of the examples above into one. Once you think you have mastered spikes to their fullest, why not try your hand at SpikeyPride IV: Spike Forever After by Goldfun4 or To Heck And Back And Forth by Yaya.

There are definitely many other things you can do with spikes that are not mentioned in this guide, such as water tricks. Before you leave I'd like you to take a look at some possible spikey glitches below:

The arrows in the image show the basic motion you have to do in order to pass it. You could consider these traps luck and most people rate caves down for use of luck traps.

I am pretty confident it's impossible to get past the first part in the last image.

You should also mention that you can make the first jump even if you have jump a tile upwards, and that if the last tile is a platform, you can jump over five spikes if the spikes are lowered one step.

Other than that, good guide.

Hey, this is a really good guide. Very informative. I never took the time to count the distance Hannah can jump, either up OR down. Thanks! This is really helpful. Also, it's nice to see someone else actually takes the time to put pictures in their guides. They're so useful, yet so underused.

And woot, my guide got linked to.

You misinterpret me: In your first image, you can place a terrain tile where the number 5 is, and the jump would still be possible. The first jump in the second image is impossible, but I think it would be possible if you lowered the first spike, you may also have to lower the fourth spike. Right now, Hannah bumps into the terrain tile while jumping.

Should this be in interesting tricks and glitches (where I put it for now) or beginners' guides? It seems to have a bit of an aura of both...

Beginners guides, I think. Almost none of these are glitches or "tricks", they just show how Hannah can jump and in some cases, drop.

I realized that last night when I was making the tutorial level, I edited the text but never edited the image. I'll edit the text a bit more to make it more clear.

It's possible. You just need an GIGANTIC amount of luck.

I moved it to basics, but why was the category removed again? Did somebody change it, or did Livio not actually fix that glitch like he said he did?

I moved it to basics earlier today, and it doesn't seem like it is in basics right now either. So yeah, glitch not fixed.

this is a great guide.

However, I'm uneasy by placing this into the Beginner's section because I know that I would never look into the beginners section if I've been playing HATPC for a long time and yet still not know some of this stuff. Maybe we could make a category for HATPC Maneuvers.

And hopefully the glitch is fixed for good this time...
