IO 2011 - HATPC Portrait

Author: Quirvy
Game: Hannah and the Pirate Caves
Date: Saturday, July 16, 2011 - 12:58 pm

[?] Karma: +1

Description:
Parts of this cave may look confusing and perhaps even midnight-like, but I assure you that it's mostly straightforward. But when you see a tutorial arrow, that usually means that you need to do something which you might not do because it isn't totally obvious.

kay so I need four gold left. I'm standing near the left-pointing tutorial arrow, and I have no idea what to do. I don't wanna hit the right arrow at the top cuz it seems to be important at the right; i don't wanna push the boulder to the left cuz i can't get through without hitting the dynamite anyway, and can't do anything at the buttom. help? have i missed something? I'm pretty sure you don't want me to jump over the four tile high spike...

That area can be a little confusing. Regarding what to do where you are:

well I have to say that the gem looks very disappointing, but oh well, the rest of teh cave was very good, so

Spoiler:

and well i didn't beat it in 2 tries, but it did take less than yaya's minicave XD

The gem is just a hidden-away extra. I didn't go out of my way to incorporate the gem into the cave like I did with Locked Out.

Personally, I like the more open feel of the cave, it's a refreshing change from all of the caves I've made where everything is squished together

Three tutorial arrows; thanks, man.

Anyways, I can see myself liking this cave; except every time I die, I must go thru the trailblazer again, which I can not guarantee surviving. And since I'm using my checkpoint accounts for other purposes, my motivation dwindles. I definitely agree with you on the openness, though. I kinda wanna make an open level now. Maybe I'll try some more later.

push the rocks without hitting the down arrow yet. push the boulder over the secret area. jump back up. hit the down arrow. push the boulder by jumping.

Yeah, I kinda understand that, so once you pass the second trailblazer and get out of the arm, but you accidentally die in some other section, if you want to resume playing after the second trailblazer, I have it uploaded to my secret cave account that I stopped using when I realized that I don't care if people play my level when I'm working on it (and that no one is usually playing my old levels anyways, so they're not likely to stumble upon my new caves while hoping to play locked out) and that it's more convenient to just test the cave on the account it's going to be uploaded on when I finish it. I just moved the starting position to that portion of the cave, the earlier parts of the cave don't affect anything other than your treasure count.

So what is my secret cave account you guys may ask?

Get ready for this:
Spoiler:

But I asked you if you thought that the opening trap was too hard in the chatbox and you didn't say anything!

C'mon Quirvy, I've known about that account since at least a long time. I'll agree, lately I've been forgoing my secret cave account and just creating them on an account with some old level on it, but that's mainly because the these Interguild Olympics levels and be fussed over. (only Isa knows my secret caving account, and he's probably forgot it, lol)

yeah but not everyone knows about it. But like most of the staff and then a few other people know about it. I mean, it's even on the cavelist.

But I felt that I needed to have an official reveal for it.

I managed to keep mine undiscovered from cavelist by adding it myself, not having it be discovered by Shos. And think if you just released it earlier, maybe CSD's dignity would've recovered better.

I remember knowing this. Not your account, but knowing that I knew it.

Anyway, cool portrait - would play but HatPC won't work, so eh.

I eagerly await further reviews, and am also puzzled as to why someone would -1 this level since I haven't really gotten any complaints about anything on it. I'm open to suggestions on how to improve my level.

yes well, there has been alot of doubtful rates lately, imo. don't mind it.

anyways, I played this cave when it came out, and didn't rate. it was fun, quite normal in difficulty, and in general very good. nice drawing too. Nothing to special to bump it above 9 tho, I tink.

Okay, I've made some serious progress on this. I think I've gotten far enough to rate this, but I wanna see if I can get any further tomorrow. I'm just posting this so I'll remember.

Remember if you get past the second trailblazer you can just use the cave up on secretcaveaccount as a checkpoint.

I have, I would've gave up by now if there wasn't a checkpoint. The area after the checkpoint is significantly better and cooler than the 1st area, IMO.

Yeah, I really like that section of the level. I think I don't like the first part because it doesn't fit in as much with the overall level. The first part had trailblazers, while from this section on it's more open space individual small traps which I think are more fun than the more complicated traps, or the trailblazers at the start.

The best part of this cave is that if you get really frustrated about a death, the loading screen that comes up right after you die perfectly displays your emotions.
