LEAVING ALL OF THIS UP FOR HISTORICAL PURPOSE, BUT REALLY YOU CAN IGNORE ALL OF THIS AND JUST USE FLASHPOINT TO PLAY HATPC. SEE THIS POST IF YOU WANT MORE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

Once again, I'm rewriting an existing guide. Or rather, instead of making a "How to open" guide, I'm making one solely focused on the problems you can face when trying to play Hannah and the Pirate Caves (HATPC). I designed this guide like a flowchart to make it easier and faster to work through.

STEP ONE: Try Again

Just open and close the game window until it finally works. If it still doesn't work after about three tries, move on to the next step.

STEP TWO: DGS Error?

If you get a DGS Error, it is most likely the fault of neopets.com. Although, this theory has never been proven. Wait a few hours or a day, and if you still get the error, move on to step three.

STEP THREE: Which browser are you using?

HATPC is a very old Shockwave game, so it does not work properly in all browsers anymore. We find that HATPC works best in Google Chrome (download: here) and Apple's Safari (download: here). Many users on this site prefer to use Chrome for HATPC. EDIT: Chrome has betrayed us. Use Safari.

If you are currently using a different browser, that may be the reason why you cannot play HATPC. Download either Chrome or Safari, then try opening HATPC from one of those browsers by clicking here. If you still can't play, move on to step four.

Side note: If you do not want to change the browser that you normally use, you may be interested in some added convenience in another of my guides, which teaches you how to create a desktop shortcut that will open HATPC from any browser.

STEP FOUR: Do you have the latest version of Shockwave Player?

http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
Visit the above link and download the latest version of shockwave. Beware of any offers to download a free toolbar or security scan. I suspect them to be safe, since they are from Adobe, but they are an annoyance.

Try opening HATPC again, by clicking here. If still nothing, go to step five.

STEP FIVE: Try visiting the game files directly

This is known to work in every browser except Internet Explorer  9.

If it still doesn't work, see the next step.

STEP SIX: Try clearing your browser's cache

Your browser saves a cache for many web pages in its attempt to cut back on loading times. Some of our users have found that clearing their cache enables them to play HATPC again.

To clear your cache in Chrome, click on the wrench icon at the top-right corner of the screen. Then click on "Options". An Options window will open up. Click on the tab called "Under the Hood". Right under the "Privacy" heading, click on the button that says "Clear Browsing Data...". Another window will open. In this window, uncheck everything except for "Empty the cache". Under "Clear data from this period:", select "Everything". And finally, click the button "Clear browsing data".

To clear your cache in Safari, click on the gear icon at the top-right corner of the screen, and click on "Reset Safari...". A window will open. uncheck everything except for "Empty the cache". Then hit the "Reset" button.

Try opening HATPC here.

If it still doesn't work, you can also try deleting all other forms of browsing data, and this usually works for most people.

Finally, if it still doesn't work, try clearing it again! Surprisingly this does make a difference quite often.

If even that doesn't work, move onto the next step.

STEP SEVEN: Maybe it's not your fault

There have been times in the past when HATPC wouldn't work for anyone because something would go wrong with neopets.com's game servers. This is similar to the DGS Error problem in Step Two, but neopets is clever, always finding better ways of screwing up HATPC. While in the past, the game used to go down occasionally, it seems very rare these days. However, the possibility is still there. To make sure if something is only happening to you, try asking other Interguild members if they are having any difficulties opening HATPC. If they are having the same problems as you, then it's possible that something's temporarily gone wrong with the game.

STEP EIGHT: Try downloading someone else's cache

We've now moved on to a daring step. We will now attempt to get HATPC to work for you by downloading almost 290 MB 755 KB of my own cache so that HATPC will always work for you. However, this cache is for Google Chrome only, so if you do not have it, download it here. However, Chrome must be closed while you follow these steps.

This method was developed when I noticed that there was something in my cache that allowed HATPC to work for me, and when the cache was cleared, it no longer worked. Luckily, I saved a backup of my cache, and I tried to find out what file was in there that was allowing HATPC to work. However, because I did not know what I was doing, removing things from the cache made it very unstable, as Chrome would sense errors and automatically change things to fix them. Therefore, I was not able to reduce the file size of the overall cache that you must download.  However, so far this method has managed to fix HATPC for two people: jellsprout and Yaya.

Also, I am sorry I cannot provide any support for non-Windows users.

Here are the steps to successfully replace your cache with mine:
  1. If on Windows Vista or Windows 7, go to:
    C:Users[USERNAME]AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser DataDefault

If on Windows XP, go to:
Cocuments and Settings[USERNAME]Local SettingsApplication DataGoogleChromeUser DataDefault

The [USERNAME] represents the name of the user that you are currently logged into on your computer. There will be a folder named after that user name.

If you are having trouble finding some of these folder, it may be because they are hidden. Click on the Start menu at the very bottom-left corner of the screen and type in "folder options" into the search. Click on the "Folder Options" program that comes up. Click on the "View" tab, then look under the group of options under "Hidden files and folder" and select the option to "Show hidden files and folders". Now try again to find the above folder locations.

  2. Delete the following folders entirely:
    Cache
    Media Cache
(if you don't want to lose your caches, for whatever reason, you may want to just rename those folders in case you want to keep a backup).

  3. Open this: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0By4BC80t6oOoNzQ5YjZhNzctNWY1NS00M2ZmLWEzNWYtNjk3NGI2Njk3YjY4&hl=en&authkey=CN3A8PAK

  4. Take the two folders inside that zip file and extract them to your "Default" folder, mentioned in the first step. Make sure that the Cache and Media Cache folders within the zip file are placed directly into the Default folder. You do not want them to be inside a new folder (which may be automatically called "ChromeHATPCcache").
Now that you have successfully replaced your cache, try to play HATPC here. If you have any problems with this complicated step, please ask for help in the comments below.

If this doesn't work, try going through this step again, but instead use this cache: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0By4BC80t6oOoNzlkNGIzMjktMWUwZC00YTgyLWJiOTUtNjk5YzMyMjAxYTZh&hl=en
Be aware that this file is nearly 290 MB.

STEP NINE: Ask for help

If you still can't get HATPC to work, just post a comment below. Try explaining in detail what happens when you try to load the game, and I or some other members will try to figure out what's wrong.

So I tested, and HATPC works fine for me in Firefox. Problem solved, for now!

E: Wait, HATIC might not work. Will test further.

E2: Okay, HATPC works in Firefox, but HATIC doesn't. I get a black screen and "Sorry, it appears that this game is not running at its intended location". I'll test in Internet Explorer next.

Okay, so HATIC runs in IE, somewhat. At first it still gives me that "unintended location" error, but I can bypass this by clicking "goto" and then "back" on the uploader page. Unfortunately clicking "start game" brings me to a black screen (though the music continues to play).

I tried again, and got as far as loading the first map preview before the game froze. I'll keep trying.

HATPC runs fine in IE.

E: I can get to the instructions and options pages in HATIC, but the options buttons don't visually respond to being turned on/off. I can't seem to get to the first map again, but I found I can escape the black screen back to the main menu by clicking goto > back.

E2: Tried again! I got to the first map preview, pressed jump to start, and the game only froze for a little before continuing to the actual first map. Let's see if all goes well.

E3: Okay, the game seems to run fine. It just seems to freeze up for a little bit on the level map previews.

E4: Nope, game froze up when I reached the third level preview and won't unfreeze. Damn.

E5: I can't even try playing custom levels, because the game won't let me paste the text. I have to use Ctrl+V and that just puts a "V" in the textbox instead of pasting the level code. So much for HATIC, I guess. I/We really need a HATIC version of this guide.

You don't necessarily have to type that whole thing. You could just block "games" if the only thing you're going to be doing while fiddler is open is play hatpc level.s

Hi, I made an account specifically because of this thread. I'm sorry if any of my phrasing sounds off, I'm bilingual, so sometimes it gets hard to get one language or the other completely right...

Right now I am using a new computer (It's only about 5 months old), a Desktop PC, with Windows 8.1 running on it. The direct .dcr link to HATPC works fine for me, on FireFox (I had been given this link through a PM on tumblr a couple years ago, too, and had fun playing it a while, I found this thread this morning when I wanted to play the game again when I lost the link) even though I have to reload (just hit F5 a bit) the page a couple times to get it to load properly. One thing I still don't understand is how to play user-created levels (I hadn't even downloaded Cave Maker when it was on the website. It appears to no longer be available on Neopets.com)

I have Ice Cave Maker and got it to work, though since I have no experience with the first one, I'm not sure how to get started building. That's not the biggest issue for me right now so I'm not really pressing for answers to that...

HATIC "works" for me like mentioned above: It only works on IE, and I get a black screen with "Sorry, it appears that this game is not running at its intended location", click "goto", click "Back", and reach the title screen and music. Options and Instructions work, but attempting to start the game leads me to a black screen with the title music. (I also seem to be unable to "paste" any user-created levels, as the hotkeys "Ctrl+V" just puts a little "v" in the box, and right-clicking only brings up the dropdown menu for Shockwave, with no "paste" option. It seems the only way to input a level is to type it all out manually *sigh*, though again that's not the biggest issue for me)

The thing is, I'm worried about when (not if) Neopets takes these games down. They don't seen to care too much about fixing them so taking them down isn't too far-fetched... In addition, they've taken down the download for Cave Maker, so HATPC might be next... When this happens we won't be able to play any of the iterations of the game, whether we load it on the website for from the source .dcr URL. Neopets.com is NOT available on the internet Wayback Machine, unfortunately.

I would like to know if there's a way to really, actually download the game to my computer.

Loading the .dcr file from my computer opens it in a browser, as it should, but again I get the "Sorry, it appears that this game is not running at its intended location" message and can't press any of the menu buttons (thus, cannot start the game). However, because saving a .dcr file seems to be the most common way that people save Flash and Shockwave games to their computer to play offline, and this problem appears to only come up with Neopets games, there isn't a solution I could find. (This happened a while back when I was looking for a way to play "The Last Smilie": a bunch of .dcr links that wouldn't work because Neopets had taken the game down, and no direct downloads)

I think that if we really want to preserve these games we need to find a way to download the content and load it independent of Neopets' servers. There are multiple Neopets games I would like to download to my computer, for nostalgia's sake and for the fact that my kids might enjoy them in the future, but I have little to no knowledge of ripping games from the internet in general, so I was wondering if anyone here had any thoughts on the matter...

I'd assume there's some sort of way to pull all the game assets off the site, presumably using Fiddler or something of the sort. I could attempt to fiddle around with it but that's not really an area that I have any expertise in, maybe someone like Jebby could try and figure it out.

I think that it'd be a good thing to have a sort of HATPC package available for download off of a site like Mega or something so we wouldn't be hosting it in case of a cease and desist or something of the like, and it'd be nice even for just nostalgias sake since this whole site was built around that one game

It's nice to see a new member on here. There seems to be nothing wrong with your phrasing; if you hadn't said you were bilingual I never would have guessed. By the way, you're making me jealous when you talk about your computer... Mine is about 14 years old (maybe even 15) and uses Windows XP. I personally don't play any Neopets games anymore and I've never made any levels for them. But I'm sure there's a way to get HATPC on here. Livio or Jebby would probably know how to do it. Unfortunately, they're not very active on the site anymore.

Ah, well, it's actually more "luck" that I have my computer, I got it because I graduated with honors... I don't care much for the title, but I'm glad it got me something I can animate on with little lag... but the computer I was running HATPC on previously actually is about 5 years old, and it still runs fine (I tried today, still nothing for HATIC, unfortunately)...

I see post after post on the internet about going to the game's website, and saving the whole webpage, and taking the .swf file from there.

I tested it out with "Nevermore 2" (a game hosted on AddictingGames, though I pulled it from the deviantART page...) and it played fine on my Flash Projector. However, I went to Neopets, took a random game (the beach volley one, in this case) and tried saving the webpage. I could not find the .swf file at all. The only .swf that wasn't an ad wasn't named like anything that would be the title of the game (in Nevermore's case the file was called "nevermore_2_clean.swf") and when I pulled it up on Flash Projector nothing appeared (just black blank space), so I don't see this method working with Neopets games. I mean, I've only tried it once, though, so, I don't know, maybe there are a few games on the site this method works on, but maybe Shockwave games just require a different method?

I wish I could help you more than I'm able to right now but there's cave makers on this site for both games if should be possible to download the dcr files for both games and you can get past both unintended location screens with the giro frame thing and I think there might also be a keyboard combination to bypass it? I remember having that problem where it would only type a v and I was doing something different I think but I can remember what it was. Uh what I'm trying to say is that I think a present all the problems should be solvable forever, except that we do rely on the fiddler proxy to play hatpc levels... Could you maybe shorten the post to a couple of key questions and hopefully me or somebody will tell you solve the problems in a day or two.

Somebody in here had a problem pasting codes in HATIC I think. This was Thomas that said this:

"Some people (neofriendly, Silver and myself) had a problem where the level codes for HatIC could not be pasted into the code box. I got around this problem by running IE as administrator. Right click > Run as administrator and then you should be able to paste level codes in the box."

Nothing I do will get Hannah and the Ice Caves or Pirate Caves to play. Could anyone provide me with the dcr files to try and get them working offline? These games were a major part of my childhood and I would really miss them if they were to die forever.

Okay, so I got both the games to load, however it says "Sorry. It appears that this game is not running at its intended location." and won't let me do anything. So is there any way to get around this or edit the files to not check for a source and just play?

Edit: Also I found out there is a 3rd game now http://www.neopets.com/games/game.phtml?game_id=1252&size=regular&quality=high&play=true

Could anyone please provide me with a link to the swf file for that? (I know I can get flash games working as they have a nice external player with the debugger standalone)

the unintented location thing goes away if you press shift+O+K

You should know there's a way to play custom levels for both games too, if you're interested.

Firstly, Thank you so much for the shift+"ok" information! I have them up and running now. Seriously, thanks a million. I love these games and they were a major part of my childhood and it is so nice to know they are saved forever and will never just vanish from the internet.

Secondly, I would really appreciate a link to the swf file for the third game so I can download it. I already have a flash game collection so I'm sure I could get it up and running no problem but my flash downloader doesn't work on neopets.

Thirdly, I just played the third game to completion and I really liked it. I'm not going to say that my opinion is the only opinion that can be correct and all that crap but here are my feelings and it is completely fine if you disagree:

I admit I may be biased by how much I love the first 2 games and just having the third one to play after so many years is literally finding a new part of one of my favorite childhood memories. But yea, the common elements like the secret passages, treasure, level design, seeing Hannah again, extra lives, and those damn spikes are priceless.

The new mechanics this time around being the fuel and oxygen (although drowning from lack of oxygen was a thing in the previous two games it was never a constant threat... well except for in a water level or two) are something I really like. If you had unlimited fuel the game would not be a challenge and there is enough oxygen (and fuel as well really) to make running out never really a danger unless you get lost on your very first playthrough. I'm betting oxygen was introduced just to kill you in case you ran out of fuel in some place and got trapped.

The overall difficulty for the first 14 levels was fairly low. About 4 out of 10 for me but the level design was still lots of fun. The 15th level though kicked things up to a 7 or 8 with no warning. I can picture that probably upset a lot of people, especially younger players. As an older player though I enjoyed the challenge a lot. I'm sad it's over. I hope we get a 4th game some day!

My only complaint is the kill area on those spikes is a bit over the top. I died a few times because I was sliding down next to spikes facing down, or touched a block with spikes facing down below it from the side, or landed next to some spikes facing up. I can live with it though.

Well I just need to know the game id so I can navigate to http://images.neopets.com/games/GAME_ID.swf and download it. I figured you guys knew how to find the game ids because you linked me to two of them. (I checked the source code of the page for the game id but can't seem to find it anywhere)

So I was told that all game ids look like g###_V##_#### so I went through the entire source code and found one string that looked like a game id and this is what I ended up with:
http://images.neopets.com/games/g1252_v13_68131.swf

but that didn't work. Does no one know the game id for Hannah and the Kreludor caves or how to find out game ids for neopets games?
