Let's take some time to find a good location. Once we've done that, we'll plan building and building styles. Locations should be near water and should not be near any other buildings. It should be relatively flat, (mountain town another day), and have one biome or two similar biomes.

Possible locations:
-6600, -2100
-2333, 6336
-1750, -5335
3183, -4990

Would swamps be a good place for it? They're pretty flat, and I found a large one at 3183, -4990.

The problem with swamps is that they have a horrid grass color. But it's still an option.

Tomorrow I'll make a poll with all of the potential locations, so now is the time to post them.

It seems that -1750, -5335 has obtained the most votes. How do you guys want to build this?

The first order of business is to answer the question of the size of this build, ish. I would rather not make borders right now, as we then may feel confined in the future when building this; however, I deem it important that we get a general idea of how large we want it to be. I assume that we would want it to take up the whole Plains biome and nothing more. I think that's a quite good size. There would be natural barriers everywhere; mountains to the south, a river to the east, a lake to the northeast, a swamp to the north, and an ocean to the west. Potentially, we could also build partially into both the lake and the ocean to a small extent (filling in the entire thing would be stupid in my opinion), so maybe just a row or two of buildings directly over the water.

I also assume we want this to be a grid of some sort. If you feel inclined otherwise, speak up!

Finally, what time do you want our first actual conglomeration (via Minecraft itself) to take place? We'd all like to discuss these topics in depth, and be able to hear from everyone instantly.

EDIT: If any of you want to drop out of this project (for whatever reason), either say so on this topic or PM Krotomo or I. If you aren't currently participating in this, and you want to, please feel free to join! By the way, I think it would be cool to periodically post screenshots of how the city is coming along, so that people without Minecraft (or those who just don't play it) can see what we've accomplished thus far, and can therefore give feedback on it.

D'oh, I forgot you made an actual topic for the project. I made it so the Featured Content links here now.

I never actually voted because I figured I'd get the best impression of each area by actually visiting them instead of looking them up on the Dynamap, and I've been too lazy to leave survival. The area that won the poll seems fine to me though.

I think I'm gonna take a break from survival over my winter break though so I'll make sure to get in on the project. My internet connection has been **** lately though and I'll probably be working most weekdays till the end of the year, so my presence shouldn't be required to break ground on the project. I know Atvelonis secretly wants to build a Minecraft equivalent of Riften anyway

I really don't think it should just be a normal grid pattern. There should be some stuff to mix it up a bit. A perfectly organized city is a bit boring.

I think that we should make the layout something like this:
Spoiler:

The lines represent canals. I was thinking that the city hall or something could be in the middle. The buildings would be in the spaces  between the lines. Also, on each side of the canals there should be a sidewalk. And there should be an occasional bridge across the canals.
As for the building style, I think that quartz and maybe stone brick or stained clay would look nice.

Okay, here are the options we have come up with; do we want:

1. A grid or grid-like pattern; basically resembling a normal planned city (e.g. Philadelphia), except that the roads that would be there in a regular city are canals. But, like kro said, a perfectly organized city is rather dull. There should be something special to it.

2. A bunch of canal circles with little canals connected big canals, as mymop suggested. The shape of the biome is more of a diamond, so this might be a little weird. I'm also not too keen on a perfectly circular city.

3. A bunch of slightly random-ish canals that would fit the landscape; meaning that our project would hypothetically resemble a real city such as Venice. Venice's Grand Canal isn't straight whatsoever; some of the canals branching off it are, some aren't. So, it's not a perfect grid, but it's relatively organized. Google "Venice from above" to see what I'm talking about. I think this would be pretty cool.

4. Other? If you have an idea, post it and I'll edit it into this post.

I personally like #3 the best. We should make the city fit into the landscape.

We should probably come up with a time when we all go on the server, so we can work on this project together.

I'm thinking the 30th at around 5 PM Interguild time?

I guess not.

Anyone up for this Saturday at, say, 4 pm Interguild Time? Don't stay silent; actually post your responses, guys. If Saturday isn't good for you, post a better date or something.

My internet connection has gotten a little better, but still not ideal and I don't generally have much consistency for when I play MC. I really don't see why everyone needs to be on to start it, that could make things more complicated. AKA start without me pl0x

Not everyone necessarily has to be on, but the more the better; more input from builders = better city.

Yeah, but we're not going to build it all in one sitting. I figure whatever is accomplished on the first meeting will be enough groundwork for everyone else to go by from there. I mean, I'm pretty sure the canal layout has been decided, right? Even just building that would point people in the right direction.

Well, yeah, I wasn't suggesting we build the entire project (maybe I was a little unclear about that, lol), rather that we do some discussion and maybe start some of the canals, if we're up for it at that point.
