Since it's bumped - I'm finishing the second semester of... ...computer science at the Warsaw University of Technology. So far it's been mainly about linear algebra, discrete mathematics or numerical methods.
Currently trying to survive the 'high school -> college' transition. School "maths" always came easily and effortlessly, whereas the real maths made my spare time dissipate and I'm still barely passing anything.
I don't know how does your teaching program look like, but I've needed that year to become accustomed to the strict, theoretical, often abstract definitions and to the general formality. |

Hey americans why are your classes all taught by grad students??? I've heard that it's rare to come into contact with actual Professors in american universities and that they don't even hold office hours. here grad students tend to be exclusively TAs and in the context of undergrad courses the most they do is hold workshops and tutorial sections for applicable courses (but the majority of them just mark exams). I mean since this is a research university i guess their principal role is to do research with their advisors and other stuff in their own classes. But in the USA it seems like they act like de-facto babysitters because the real professors are too Important to deal with Children and probably spend more time giving interviews on talk shows.

it depends on the university of course but typically TAs are for labs. if you're talking about adjunct professors, who may happen to be grad students, it's kind of just because there aren't enough professors. basically, it's cheaper to not pay as well.

My GCSE's are very nearly over, so I'll be doing Further Maths, Chemistry and Computing starting september

Linear Algebra is incomprehensible nonsense. It is honestly easier to just learn Quantum Mechanics instead and reverse engineer Linear Algebra from that.

In which aych bee rants about physics pedagogy
Why are harmonic oscillators taught in first year physics before students have ever been exposed to differential equations? Our professors did show the derivations, but I'm confident in saying that they flew over the heads of pretty much everybody. Ideally the physical applications should help you learn the math, but my E&M professor explicitly told us not to worry about the derivations because we didn't have the knowledge to understand them yet. There is an uncouth joke comparing physics and math that I will not replicate here, but it's really quite apt because, in the end, the only thing that seemed to matter was plugging the numbers into the formulas, which were provided on a cheat sheet. Now that I'm taking the ODE class I realize that the cheat sheet wouldn't even have been necessary if I'd learned about diffeqs beforehand; I have memorized the formulas because I actually understand the derivations this time (which you're expected to do, as cheat sheets are not allowed). Probably the main problem is due to a lack of coordination between the math and physics departments, and I honestly wish that I could've taken physics after ODEs even though that's logistically impossible. Most students have to wait until second term of year 2 to take diffeqs because you need linear algebra first and that's also a second year class, which is 3 whole semesters after introductory physics. I find this incredibly frustrating and nobody seems to acknowledge it.

Glad for you. What's the GED tests equivalent to? When do you guys usually take them? Are these useful for entry-to-uni or stuff?
^^^ the above questions are asked by a nonamerican who has no idea what these are

hey americans why are all of your exams multiple choice, even the finals??? I've heard that you do not even need to show your work because all the grading is done through scantrons which u must purchase with your own money

I've only taken 2 finals in college using scantrons and both were for poli sci courses. Even then, we only did that because it was accompanied by a research paper/presentation due generally around the same time.
