About this Section

In this section of the manual, I will walk you through the canonical levels for the game "Hannah and the Pirate Caves". In other words, it's a walkthrough for HATPC.

The format of the walkthroughs is as follows:

  • First, I will give a brief description of what you can expect to see from the level.
  • Then, I'll start the walkthrough, giving step-by-step instructions on how to reach the exit.
  • Instructions of how to get the optional items, the gems (of which there is supposedly one in every level) and the hearts, will be interspersed throughout the walkthrough. If you do not wish to get said items, you may skip those paragraphs, continuing on immediately after them, as if they never happened.
  • Now, there will be a video-walkthrough of something similar to what I just described. This walkthrough will include how to get any gems/hearts that may exist in the level. It should be fairly obvious what to do to avoid them, if you're not interested in picking them up.
  • Then, I'm going to get very deep. I'm going to explain the steps that you'll need to take in order to get the MOST POINTS POSSIBLE.
  • Then, there will be a video-walkthrough showing exactly how to do that as well.
  • Sometimes, the steps you'll have to take to get the post points possible... verge on insanity. If you're going for a trophy, or just a really high score, that's what this section is for. I'll describe what you can do to get a higher score, without having to take the unnecessary risks that would be required in order to get the highest score.

Level Introduction

Interguild
The first level of Hannah and the Pirate Caves. Are you ready?

Click here for the level code of this level.

"tutorial 1 (basic training)" is a simple level. Actually, it's impossible to die (according to the game, at least -- it actually is possible if you try really hard, but it's not something you'll actually have to worry about). Despite that, Neopets actually managed to keep the level fairly interesting? Needless to say, they did a good job making this level. It's well designed, explains HATPC's key concepts well, and is actually sort-of fun to play. The gem is actually fairly well-hidden as well, as there's more to finding it than the usual "find the secret area" that most of the other levels like to do. Anybody would be hard pressed to make a better introductory level.

It's recommended that you play through the tutorial levels. If it's your first time, then obviously they'll be helpful when learning how to play. If it's not your first time, then maybe you're going for a high-score (or maybe the avatar?), in which case, the tutorial levels are easy points. To get this game's avatar for the Neoboards, you'll need to clear a score of 150000 points.

Neopets If you go through all the Tutorial levels,
obtaining the Hannah and the Pirate
Caves avatar will be a piece of cake!

Walkthrough

Now, let's get to the meat and potatoes. First, the game's going to tell you to "Press jump to start...", which isn't very helpful considering they haven't told us how to jump yet. Did they really expect us to read the controls on the game's description page? Really? Couldn't they have made it say "Press space to start..."? Wouldn't that have been easier? Anyway, you press space to jump, and since you press jump to start, it makes sense that you need to press space to start, so press space. You'll also need to use the arrow keys to move, in order to get your hands on that first valuable tutorial message. Start off by moving to the right, and getting a read of that first tutorial message:

Interguild The very first pop-up message.
This is one of many and there
is no way to turn it off. They
sometimes provide useful
information, so you might as
well read them.

That's a pretty helpful message, honestly. First, it tells you where to go, tells you to follow the arrows (in case you forgot that it just told you to go to the only place where it's possible to go), and tells you that you can't die in this level. Unfortunately, it didn't tell you how to jump, but you figured that out already, didn't you? Click or press space to make the message go away.

Jump your way up the cliff where you will encounter wooden crates. Those crates are broken by Hannah on contact, so just break through those and fall down into the area below. Keep following the tutorial arrows, which now point you to the left. Fall down off the end of the platforms and collect your first treasures. In order to complete levels in HATPC, you must first collect all of the level's treasures. Proceed back to the right, still following the tutorial arrows (this is hard, no?). Crawl under the low ceilings (miraculously, they tell you how to duck this time!), and then climb the ladder (press up to climb up ladders). Continue to follow the arrows, which now point you under a low ceiling and then up through a series of platforms. With platforms, you can jump up through them, but you can't fall back down through. At the top, you'll encounter another four treasures to add to your stash. Now, follow the arrows while running to the right, periodically pressing jump (aka: space) in order to cross over the gaps. If you fall down, the tutorial messages will tell you that you have to return all the way back to the left, climb up the leftmost ladder, and try to pass over all the jumps all over again. In reality, if you head up either of the middle two ladders, you can jump up through the platforms, which are around the midpoint of this gap-jumping section. Anyway, after the first gap, there's a few more treasures for you to collect. After the second gap, you have to jump up and break the crates up above you in order to cause the treasure that rests above them to fall down. Collect these treasures, and continue to the right, jumping across the final gaps.

So you wanna get your first gem, eh? In order to get this level's gem, instead of jumping across the fifth and final gap, you fall down. There's one loose boulder in this room available to be pushed. So you're not sure what boulders are and how they work? That's because you haven't played the boulder tutorial yet! Before finding the gems, perhaps it's a better idea to finish the game through for the first time? Anyway, if you're still up for it, push that boulder to the left.

Interguild
Push the free boulder to the left. It will fall and break the platforms, revealing the secret path to the hidden gem!

The boulder will break through the platforms below, revealing a secret area underneath. Follow the secret area to the right and collect the gem at the end. Head back out of the secret area, climb back out of the pits, and continue back across the gaps.

You should now continue to the right, pick up the last few treasures, and watch in awe as the door opens. That's how HATPC works. You pick up all the treasures, and then the door opens. Make contact with open doors to finish levels. If the door doesn't open, then you've missed some treasures, and you need to try and head back to find the ones you missed. If they were before that first section with the platforms, then you will not be able to collect them, the level is no longer able to be completed, and you must restart. Restarting is essentially the same as dying, so, apparently, there was a way to die after all! Thanks for lying to us, Mr. Game! Well, technically they said "nothing can hurt you", but that's at least a half-truth. To restart, click the "Restart" Button in the upper-left corner of the screen. Be careful not to accidentally click the "Quit" Button, though. If the restart button doesn't work, which happens when you have no lives left, then you have lost the game and you must click "Quit". There is a glitch in this game where, even though you'll still have one life left, the Restart Button won't work (even though it should). Normally, you can get around this glitch by finding some way to kill Hannah. In this level, since it is "impossible to die", you will not be able to kill Hannah, you will have to click "Quit", and the game will be over.

Climb the final ladder, jump to the right (jumping off ladders can be tricky at first, but it gets easier the more you do it), and land up on the section of terrain on which the door is situated. Enter the door, and you have completed your first HATPC level! Congratulations!

Interguild
Congratulations! You have just completed the very first level in Hannah and the Pirate Caves! Only 25 more to go!

Video-Walkthrough

Made by Shos

Max-Points

This level is an extremely easy level to get the maximum amount of points in. The only trick is, aside from getting the gem, that you have to make sure that you break all the crates that you come across, while being careful not to accidentally miss any. It's so easy to do, there is no need for a separate max-point video for this level. The primary walkthrough, in this case, doubles as the max-point walkthrough. Also, since it's impossible to die, there's absolutely no need to worry about avoiding "unnecessary risks" when going for a high score.

"tutorial 1 (basic training)" max-point level stats:
In-level points1565
Treasures19
Gem?Yes
Extra Life?No
End-of-level points14500
Total points for this level16065
Maximum points so far16065
Remaining Lives4

Wow, yeah, very well done. I don't think many people are going to be so incompetent that they need a tutorial to finish the tutorial levels, but I guess it'll be good to have consistency.

Something tells me this series will take quite a while to finish...

Now that we have a basic design to the level walkthroughs, the others should be easier to make.
But not by me. I have other stuff to do.

I'm going on holiday in 2 days and won't be back till August. I really don't have the time.
And I'm going to do the Glitch Articles first, but Accel needs to fix the code in article glitch already.

Primarily, I wrote this article (jell "finished" it, and I'm glad he did, 'cause I'm not sure if I ever would have), and I (kinda) intend to write the rest of them too... I work 2-4 days over the weekends, but there's still time, here and there. The next thing I might do, though, is cavebot v2 update 2.

I think this article is pretty good, but try to reword it as the words 'you have lost the game' in the article made me lose the game.

Why don't people update these articles periodically?

Because of the new layout, the formatting on this (and probably other) articles is now a little messed up (bullets points off the side of the page, pictures awkwardly placed...). Somebody (Jell?) should probably give them all a little fix-up?

fixed. You just need to add the <ul> and </ul> tags around all of the <li> tags (not individually). I'm not gonna go around an fix all of the articles, though.... so you do it.
