The Karma System was an alternative to the old points system. It was proposed by Dando on December 1st, before the Interguild's current site was released. The idea of the Karma system is to encourage our users to make better and more thought out posts.
The idea of the Karma System is that you get to vote on posts depending on how you feel about them. The total count each post is displayed at the top right portion of the post. That total gets added to the user's total karma, which is the total score of all of the user's posts.
3 simple scenarios to follow:
Scenario 1 - A post is very clever, insightful or useful, or you agree with the opinion presented in it very much. In this situation, you should choose to hit the + button, which is a green upwards arrow on the top right portion of the post.
Scenario 2 - The post stands out as being rude, offensive, spam, poorly thought out, or something that you just plainly dislike. In this situation, you would hit the - button, which is a red downwards arrow on the top right portion of the post.
Scenario 3 - The post does not stand out. It is simply just an ordinary post. In this scenario, you wouldn't do anything, because there is nothing special about this post, and you shouldn't be rewarding or punishing users for making average posts.
Restrictions to the Karma System:
Firstly, you cannot rate posts that are 10 days old. This is to prevent people from spam rating, or in other words, going around and rating a specific person's posts negatively/positively with no regard to the content of the post, but merely because they like or dislike that person.Mod powers have been created to ensure that there is no foul play going on. If you are found to be spamrating, you will have the ability to rate posts permanently or temporarily taken away, and have your spam-rates deleted.
You will not be able to rate your own posts, for obvious reasons.
Having a negative karma doesn't necessarily mean that people hate you, but are more likely the result of a few bad posts with no outstanding posts to bump your karma back up. If you do end up with a negative karma, it's nothing to be ashamed of (unless you're jell, in which case, you should cry and eat ice cream in a dark room)

The purpose of preventing rates on posts 10+ days old is to prevent spamrating(such as if someone wants to rate all of this one person's posts negatively, but doesn't want many people to notice it). But I dunno if it should apply to Articles. I don't really care, either.  spooky secret | |

We should occasionally post the karma rankings, so that we can see how they keep on changing. Last known karma rankings looked like this: Spoiler: It is now this: Spoiler: *Though Dando52's current karma stands at 19, her real karma is 34, because 15 karma was at one point removed without any rates being made, likely to keep her out of the karma rankings. Previous karma races CSD-Dando Predicted: CSD Winner: CSD Livio-Shos-Isa Predicted: Isa Winner: Isa D52-Krotomo Predicted: D52 Winner: D52(true karma is 34) Jebby-Yaya Predicted: Jebby Winner: Yaya Current Karma Races 1-2 Isa 165 Quirvy 164 Isa gained like 30 karma is 3 weeks, and thus had taken the lead on me. Isa posts a lot, I'm going to disappear during spring break, Isa will probably be leading by whenever I make another update in the karma rankings, if I ever do. 3-4 CSD 114 Harumbai 114 Although CSD is clearly the most awesome member on the interguild, he doesn't post enough. Harumbai managed to get 6 karma by calling himself awesome. If I did that, I'd probably get -4 karma. Harumbai will probably be leading next update 5-7(8) Yaya 87 Livio 87 Shos 84 (Dando 81) Livio is likely going to be making progress on Aeon/layout, and that'll probably give him tons of karma. I just don't recall Yaya making enough notable posts to catch up to him. Shos keeps on making bad posts, so he's not catching up to either of them. And Dando just doesn't post at all now days. 5 Livio 6 Yaya 7 Shos 8 Dando 9-10-11 Jebby 30 Teo 30 Captain Obvious 30 Captain Obvious has gained like 30 karma in 2 weeks, Jebby is inactive, and teo is moderately active. Captain Obvious should just not even show up in the karma rankings, so I'm going to ignore him. I think that teo and Jebby will probably end up with about the same karma, so I'm going to throw up a wild guess and say that they end up tied. If I ever get karma I'd still lose to negatives, completely throwing me off that karma rank. Please, exclude me whenever you can. I am not a master of karma and karma-gaining and it nowadays is making me very, very confused. | |
