I propose we extend the amount of time you can karma rate posts for to something like 1 month given the low amount of user activity. Maybe it's just me but it feels like whenever I come online and see a post I want to rate it's over 2 weeks old

A month would be a little more appropriate. I've admittedly not been as active here as I've been in the past.

I recently read some pieces on mid 2000s niche & insular online communities, and they definitely gave me some Interguild vibes/nostalgia. At first in the back of my mind I kept thinking "but the Interguild wasn't as niche as these", but then I realized it would probably be even more niche than these to an outsider perspective. I guess it seems normal when I'm trapped in here with all of you

If you have not done so already, I would highly recommend adding a plant to your windowsill. I've been tending one of my own for about six months now. It oxygenates the room, helps you think, relieves stress. A great investment, all things considered.

aych bee shall ignore your advice as aych bee routinely experiences nightmares of accidentally failing to tend to the needs of living creatures for which she is responsible (including but not limited to a cat, a dog, a hamster and a leopard)

I saw Captain Marvel yesterday. I was much more impressed than I thought I would be. As far as an origin story goes, it was compelling and coherent while not becoming wishy-washy. Although not completely free from over-familiar elements of superhero movies, the plot developed cleanly and tied very well into the other films in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Brie Larson's character was written in a much more believable way than most Marvel movies can muster. She's confident, funny, and, if you'll pardon my French, pretty badass, yet not in an arrogant or annoying way. Many writers/directors seem not to recognize that what makes a character likable isn't how much they talk about their amazing traits, but how much they actually exemplify them. I find most of the Avengers superheroes extremely irritating because they're supposed to effectively be the manifestation of heroism, and pretend that they are, but somehow all have a terrible sense of humor, no concept of subtlety, and an utterly inability to work together cohesively.
To be a little more direct; Captain Marvel is thankfully free from a slough of hamfisted, "And THAT'S what you get for underestimating a girl!!1!1!" comments that come after beating up a bunch of faceless bad guys. Larson doesn't need to prove to anyone that she is playing an admirable character, because it's obvious by her elegant mannerisms, cool confidence, and talented combat abilities that she is representative of a great number of positive aspects of femininity that I think many girls really appreciate seeing on the silver screen.
Some people have downplayed the film's effective use of its protagonist as a role model for young women, stemming from an inability or misguided refusal to empathize with people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the film industry, at least in leading roles. I strongly disagree with them. It would be easy, as a person whose likenesses have been given the spotlight in the film industry for my entire life, to think, "What's the big deal? The actress should have no bearing on my perception of the film," in good faith. However, this fundamentally ignores the fact that, for many people, being able to truly put themselves in the shoes of that superhero and feel empowered has, until recently, been impossible.

Started a new job a few weeks ago. I'm treating/removing invasive plants in various local parks. The pay is pretty subpar, but hopefully it's a foot in the door for future biology jobs. I do enjoy the all-terrain, different location every day nature of the job (aside from the potential for rolled ankles), but I never realized how quickly the forests of Ohio start to feel like Vietnam once you go off the trail while wearing the mandated pants & long sleeves.

That's really cool!! Invasive plants are a huge issue in the northeast, I assume it's similar in Ohio/other areas of the country as well. They totally leech off of the ecosystem and ruin the diversity of the area. If nothing else the job you're doing is actually really useful, unlike so many jobs in the world right now.
Re rolled ankles: I would recommend a nice pair of hiking boots if you can afford them... nice, strong ankle support. I've had mine for like six years and they're still lovely as ever.

Any job experience is good experience is good experience, especially if it is tangentially in the same industry. It shows you are passionate about the work and have good work ethics. In the worst case it is something to talk about during interviews, which is a lot more important than people realize.
On a side note, you are in Ohio? I was there two years ago for work, at Athens. Also went to a few other locations in the neighborhood. Where about in Ohio are you from?

Damn, Jellsprout in Ohio. I live in the northeast part of the state, near Cleveland. I went to Athens on a church mission trip when I was like 11. I recall it being very... rural, but I suppose that applies to a lot of the state

This is a great read about the generic, robotic tone modern dictionaries use to attempt to simplify the English language to a point where diction is no longer interesting.

I'd never even heard of it until now. If 2012 was the last time it happened, that makes sense— that's ancient history.

Wow, it's been years since I was last here. I just spontaneously remembered this place and decided to log in again.
What's up guys, I've been working a casual part-time job as an admin/office assistant, I was treated with depression and have been taking meds and gone through some therapy for it (although things are still far from stable for me), and I'm planning out a novel series (it's very dark in tone) and've been writing bits and pieces here and there. Not...much else, actually; I lead a pretty average, banal life.
Have I missed anything interesting while I've been away? | | atvelonis |

Hey, long time no see. The place has been pretty quiet, I suppose; everyone is getting older and wiser and busier. Jorster has a pretty cute kid now... the chance to create a multi-generational Interguild is within our grasp!
