By population Calgary is the third largest city in Canada. The first two are Toronto and Montréal which are located in Ontario and Québec respectively.

Holy crap, it must've grown a lot since I was last there. It was almost entirely fields, except for downtown which was pretty small.

I would say that we tend to pronounce it more like mare-lind. My guess is that it was once pronounced like it looks like it would, but overtime it's pronunciation got morphed as it's kind of just easier to say mare-land than mare-E-land (less syllables), and mare-lind for whatever reason, to me seems to sound better than mare-land. But maybe it's just because I've heard "Marelind" all my life
Regardless, it's not nearly as bad as Arkansas vs Kansas.
Kansas is pronounced sort of like "can sis", which makes sense, but Arkansas is pronounced like "ark in saw"
Connecticut is also kind of weird, looking like it should be pronounced "connect-ick-cut", but really more like "con net ick it"

Eugh, things based on regional dialects.
How I pronounce all of said state names:
mɛɹələnd (ɛ as in set for both US and UK, ɹ as in rat for both US and UK)
ɑɹkənsɑ: (ɑ as in paw for US, : meaning elongated)
kænzəs (æ as in man for US, UK)
kənɛtɪkət (ɪ as in pin for US, UK)
