Hello, I am making this topic because I personally feel that the interguild should have an app and I would actually be willing to (attempt (because it would be my first OFFICIAL project that I would have full intention to go through with)) make this app for the interguild, with the right information of course, so if an operator would be willing and interested in having me attempt this, please just pm me, anyone please leave your thoughts in a reply

What exactly could be in the app that would be more useful than just going on to the interguild through the browser?

well I plan on it being available on the android (and later iphone) market, thus creating larger amounts of feed for the interguild, also potentially raising user activity, and the overall number of active users. also making the interguild better formatted on portable devices, rather than simply going on your browser, as it is inconvenient lay out on a portable device

How would you make this?

EDIT: Shouldn't this topic be under "News and Announcements" or "The Interguild Board" or something?

Could you code it or whatever by yourself?

Or with the help of a mod?

I would do most of it on my own, I would just need some info like RSS feed for the site and such

Kinectking, don't develop for Iphone. They are terrible with developers, as it costs $100+ for a developers license, and they have total control over your app. Android I'm fine with, but you should develop for windows phone as well.

I don't see jow would it increase activity/feed.

Person using browser: "Oh look, a casual gaming site mainly dedicated to a treasure collecting squirrel spawned from one of Viacom's multiple limbs aimed at 7-10 year olds" *moves on*
Person using android: "Oh look, a casual gaming site mainly dedicated to a treasure collecting squirrel spawned from one of Viacom's multiple limbs aimed 7-10 year olds" *moves on*

In fact, I'd say an Interguild app would bring in less members than the site does already due to the fact that most of the games we support don't run on mobile. That pretty much leaves chatting with members, and commenting on levels, which isn't what most people join for. I don't honestly find the Interguild that inconvenient on my phone. You have to zoom in. Big whoop. The people who are meant for this site end up finding it one way or another as you see.

I feel like when Evansun suggested a similar idea 3ish years ago, most people supported him, but I don't see the need.

Good point, and I agree that iPhone subscription is expensive and semi useless, but if later on (after android and probably windows are out) I may consider an iOS version if people are willing to donate to the fund

and commenting on levels,

Might I add that if you can't even play the game on the phone you're using to comment with, why would anyone even bother to comment on the levels in the first place from the app?  Maybe if it's to join in on an off topic rant?

I know that's the case, but I had the feeling someone would bring it up as a point of defense for what you can do so I threw it in anyway.

Maybe we're just getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Sometime within the next 5-10 years, iPhones will probably become utterly obsolete, so will Androids and pretty much anything else very similar to them. As our society gets older, so does technology. It would probably take us, at least, 2-3 years to actually make an app… That's quite a while. Even with the combined efforts of the entire Interguild, assuming every single member knows how to code anything even in the slightest, it would still take at least a year. But probably less than half would actively support it, and of those, maybe one or two would know the anything about coding. The most complicated program I can code is a little skiing game where the object is to avoid trees and collect flags. Pitiful, right? Maybe Livio or Sniper could do most of the work, but they're pretty busy with college right now, so the most they could work on it would be for an hour or two very week or so. Not much progress. And that's if they even remember.

Livio comes onto the Interguild like 3 or 4 times a week, it seems. It took him 3 weeks to reply to a pm about posting images for levels. If he hardly has time to respond to a question as simple (ish) as that, imagine how difficult it would be for him to be working on another Interguild thing in addition to Interguild stuff and his college classes. If I were Livio, I would fizzle into a pile of dust from all the responsibilities. For example, I can hardly even remember to look at my math homework, let alone finish it. (But yeah, I do somehow manage to go on the Interguild 1-9000 times a day, for the most part. Maybe I'm just lazy.) It's difficult to handle responsibility and work and more work and people pestering you about images all the time, I'm sure. I just don't think that Livio has the time for it.

As well, what would be the benefits of an Interguild app over a window in Safari? The optimal differences would be, mobile layout, big links, smooth running, and so on and so forth. But really, you can just spread two fingers and tap a link on an iPhone, it's not really that hard. And really, I'm on my iPod Touch right now typing this. In fact, I do most of my Interguild posting from it, I play levels and games from my computer less often. It's annoying to revise larger posts, like this one for example, it's difficult to reread and re-reread posts that are bigger than just one paragraph, but I do it all the time. It does bug me how auto-correct changes what I type often, but the problem would still exist in an app, it would be very difficult to completely eradicate it. And either way, you can't play games from an app any better than you can from a browser.

To add on to the Cons, an app would have to update regularly when someone made a new topic. If you don't check your updates, you my as well just switch back to the old browser window version. It can take a while for an app to update, up to like 15 minutes; you'd be waiting there twiddling your thumbs while you wait for the new feature or whatever get implemented. That would be rather dull, don't you think? The app may actually end up being slower than the browser version. And honestly, everybody except for me goes on through the computer regularly. So, would it even get used often, if at all? To continue, links wouldn't even work. They would just send you to a page IN THE BROWSER, which contradicts the point of having an app anyway!

Also, most members would have more than one browser window open an a time, like the Interguild and Google or something. Often, the need for Google pops up on the Interguild, like when someone wants to copy an image from Google into a post they've made or are making. You would have to either make the app size several bazillion GB to include every single image on the Internet, or members would have to minimize the window, open up Safari, copy the image URL, then paste it in the app, after reopening the window, just to get an image. That would really be annoying. You would have to be own heck of a person to do all that just to copy an image into a post, which you would probably make more than one of.

I can only think of two ways around that right now, and probably ever. Get every single image on the Internet into the app, then every single website that those images are uploaded to, so you can copy the URL into the Interguild. That would take up so much memory, the world would explode. Just kidding, your device just wouldn't let you download the app because of the immense size that it could not hold. Let's see, how much space would that take up? Like 100 Terra Bytes or some ridiculously large number like that?

The other is, add another browser into the app, complete with an awesome search engine that we would need for it. I don't think we could use Google or Bing or anything like that, we would probably have to make our own. Doesn't seem too hard, now, does it? Well, as I said earlier, hardly anyone knows a thing about coding. And also stated earlier, Livio is super busy right now, so he couldn't make it. There's a search engine on the Interguild right now, but it's not that good. Every single word you type in has to be in the result for anything to appear. Google isn't like that, not every single word necessarily HAS to be on the result for anything to appear. It would be significantly more difficult to make a better search engine than the current one, and as stated earlier, LIVIO IS BUSY DOING STUFF!!!

I can think of one Pro— Maybe if there was an app, there wouldn't be any ads! Well, so what? The ads are hardly noticeable on the current site, as they're only small ones on the top and bottom of every page. And come on, just suck it up. Ads aren't that annoying, even if you spend your entire day staring at them. Well actually, if you're that hardcore, you would have to like them. Hardly anyone even pays attention to Internet ads anyway, so what's the point of removing them? It's not like it would really make a difference, not any noticeable one at least. If you were super-duper OCD and noticed every single change in everything ever, then maybe, but I don't think anyone is really that sharp-eyed. Certainly not me.

Also, why would anyone, knowing the app is no better than the browser version, even care to download it? Even if it was free, it wouldn't even get noticed or anything, no new members would be attracted. People aren't weird enough that when they see that a site has an app, it must be super amazing and whomever created it must be a god who has descended from the heavens. I highly doubt that anyone other than the 10-20 active (ish) users already on the Interguild would download it. Just us. How could an app like that attract any new players? Unless it miraculously reached the top 300 apps, we would get 0 new members from it. And even if we told all of our friends, "This awesome website I go on just made an app!", no one would truly care enough to even ask what it's called. We're a small community, and were not going to get much larger, that's for sure. (Almost sure.)

So. An app? No way.

Look at the Facebook app; it doesn't need to update for 15 minutes every time. It only takes 10 seconds tops.
But I don't agree with the app thing anyways.
